One thing I’ve learned while making this documentary is script is king. So if Screen Australia wanted to reinvent themselves, they should accept scripts via email, usb memory stick, cd or the old fashioned way, on paper. Said submitted scripts should be feature length and completed. No paperwork involved. You should be able to submit your script with a cocktail napkin that you’ve hastily penned your name and mobile number on. Creative people don’t do well with paperwork. Tarantino can barely spell. I’ve been making this doco for 2 and a half years, with daily research, I have no idea what options you have after you write a script.
Just make the submission process easy, and pick out the cream of the crop. Get good script readers to analyse the scripts on the merits of the script alone.
Then hook up the scriptwriters with the most talented directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, makeup crews, those that paint with light, stuntmen, body doubles, best boys, cgi nerds, grips and actors. Then help finance the film in the 100k to 500k range.
That would have to be good for the industry.
