I think there’s been 2 notable films so far this year: Mary and Max and Samson and Delilah. But what is more notable is that we’re steering away from the mediocrity and homogeny of the coming-of-age stories that have everyone hating Australian films. Disgrace doesn’t work for me, but it’s different, and shot in South Africa. $9.99 is another stop-motion, an Israeli co-production. Other titles like Last Ride seem to have received a good response at Sydney and Dungog festivals, so here’s hoping.
It’s funny how a couple of good films has people talking about a renaissance, and I agree that we need 2-3 years to pass before we can assess that. There’s been so much talk in the last couple of years, so much introspection about where we’ve been going wrong, that I can only hope that we are turning the corner and starting to make films that people want to see.
I know nothing about those two titles, but I agree that the signs are good. I wonder how much of this is filtering from criteria and policy changes by the funding bodies.

With Lake Mungo and The Horseman yet to be released, there are some good signs, aren’t there?

We all do.
